Nacka strand, SE

The topography of Nacka Strand in Stockholm determined the design of the residential complex with the same name. A clever facade design that captures the colourfullness of the environment and mirrors it on the buildings, optimally integrates the high structures into the surroundings.

The "K1 Nacka Strand" building complex is part of a large residential estate located around a rugged hill east of Stockholm's city centre. Tasked with overcoming the considerable height difference due to the dramatic topography, the architects designed the buildings so that they would fit harmoniously into the surroundings despite their heght and would not look overly colossal from the road.

The complex encompasses a total of 60 apartments. Darker areas in the lower storeys are used for bicycle parking facilities including workshop and storage units for the apartments. There is also a communal area with sauna and relaxation room as well as room at street level to house a shop or small office. Originally, the facades were to be completely designed in glazed brick in various shades of green to project the densely wooded hill in the background. In a nod to numerous brick buildings in the area that hark back to the region's industrial heritage, red was ultimately chosen as a contrasting colour. The grey glazed brick on the building plinths draw on the colour of the road. The reflection of the sky and environs created on the glazed surfaces sees the buildings optimally integrated into the surroundings despite their height.
